How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your body already makes. It binds up to a thousand times its own weight in water, which is what makes it useful as an injectable: placed in the correct tissue plane it occupies space, draws in water so the result settles and softens over the first two weeks, and provides a scaffold that gives the skin above it structure.
Different fillers are engineered for different jobs. A soft, flexible gel belongs in lips and tear troughs, where a visible edge would give the game away. A firm, highly cross-linked gel belongs along the jawline and chin, where you want projection that holds. Using the wrong product in the wrong place is the most common reason filler looks like filler.

Cheeks. Midface volume loss is the single biggest driver of a flat, tired appearance, and restoring it lifts everything below. Often the most effective single treatment on the face.
Lips. Volume, definition of the border, correction of asymmetry, or hydration without added size. Our default is conservative — we would rather you came back for more than asked us to dissolve it.
Jawline and chin. Definition along the mandible and projection at the chin. Changes the profile more than most patients expect.
Tear troughs. The hollow between lower lid and cheek, and the most technically demanding area on the face. See our dark circles page for when filler is and is not the answer.
Non-surgical rhinoplasty. Camouflaging a dorsal hump, lifting a drooping tip, straightening an asymmetry — fifteen minutes with no downtime, and the area with the highest vascular risk on the face. That is exactly why it should be done by a doctor who knows nasal anatomy.
Hands. Radiesse restores volume to the backs of the hands, where age shows early and is rarely treated.

Who Is Suitable For Dermal Fillers?
Fillers suit adults with volume loss, asymmetry or structural concerns who are in good general health and have realistic expectations. Most of our patients are between their late twenties and their sixties, though the goal changes with age — definition and shape earlier, restoration later.
They are not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; have an active skin infection or inflammatory condition at the site; have a history of anaphylaxis or severe allergy; have an autoimmune condition affecting healing; or have had a recent dental procedure, which temporarily raises infection risk.
Tell us about every medication, particularly blood thinners, and about any previous filler, permanent filler or thread work. Permanent fillers in particular change the assessment completely and we need to know about them before we treat.
If what you actually need is surgery, we will tell you. A consultant plastic surgeon’s clinic is one of the few places where “filler will not fix this” is a sentence you will reliably hear.
We use the Juvederm range of fillers produced by Allergan. At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester dermal fillers are used to restore volume following ageing. The common areas dermal fillers are used include the cheeks, lips and nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines). We also provide more advanced fillers such as non-surgical rhinoplasty and tear trough treatments.
How long do dermal fillers last?
There are a number of different types of hyaluronic acid fillers. How long they last depends on the type of product but generally they can last from 6 months up to 18 months. The softer products such as Volbella or Juvederm 3 last about 6-9 months. The intermediate ones such as Juverderm 4 or Volift last between 9-12 months. The thicker products such as Voluma can last up to 18 months. These are just rough guides as it also depends where the dermal filler is injected. Your body may also break down the products more quickly.
What are the risks of dermal fillers?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. They are relatively safe and complications are uncommon. The potential risks with dermal fillers include:
Bruising, Swelling, Bleeding
It is normal to get some swelling after any dermal filler treatment and this usually takes a few days to settle. Some patients may like the initial volume after treatment that reduces after a few days so they think the filler has dissolved but this is actually the swelling improving. Some patients may also experience bruising or bleeding which is can be related to medication being taken. Some medicines such as aspirin and herbal supplements can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.
Nodules or Granulomas
These are uncommon with hyaluronic fillers but can occur. Granulomas are lumps that form as a reaction to a foreign substance in the body. These are more common with permanent fillers and certain types of temporary fillers. If lumps form with hyaluronic acid fillers they can often be dissolved with an injection of hyalase. Granulomas from other fillers may need surgical removal.
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid products are very rare. If you have a history of severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis then you should not have the treatment.
Asymmetry
All patients have some degree of asymmetry and fillers are often used to try and correct asymmetries. Some patients will, however, notice slight asymmetries after treatment as they become more aware and scrutinize their face more after treatment.
Migration
Sometimes fillers can migrate or move from the area of injection to the surrounding area. This can be caused by rubbing or injury to the area.
Infection
Infections are uncommon after these treatments.
Tissue Necrosis
Necrosis or death of the skin is a rare complication of filler injections. This occurs if the dermal filler blocks tiny blood vessels or if the pressure from the filler reduces the blood supply to the skin.
Blindness
There are a few reports of blindness following filler injections. This is a very rare complication with about 100 cases worldwide. This arises when filler enters the bloodstream around the face and travels to the vessels in the back of the eye.

How much do dermal fillers cost at CLNQ?

Who will inject me?
A doctor. every filler treatment here is doctor-administered under the clinical governance of a consultant plastic surgeon.
Can fillers be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can, with hyaluronidase, which we keep on site. Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) and poly-L-lactic acid (Lanluma) cannot.
Will people be able to tell?
Not if it is done proportionately. Overfilling is a choice, not an inevitability, and it is one we will discuss with you rather than make for you.
Does it hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied first and most fillers contain lidocaine. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain.
Do you treat filler done elsewhere?
Yes — including dissolving, correcting asymmetry and managing complications, whoever did the original work.
What is the difference between filler and Profhilo?
Filler adds volume and structure. Profhilo (£300) hydrates and remodels the skin without filling. Polynucleotides (£300) improve skin quality. They answer different problems and are often combined.
