Frequently Asked Questions
PRP is short for Platelet Rich Plasma. This is a technique that uses your own blood to get plasma rich in growth factors that can be used for rejuvenation, regeneration or hair loss. When blood is taken it contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The platelet part contains the growth factors we use for treatments.
The first step involves taking blood from your arm, which is just like having a blood test. The blood is collected in a special bottle which is then placed in a centrifuge device to spin it. This separates the components of the blood so the platelet rich plasma sits at the top and red blood cells below. The PRP is then drawn from the bottle and used for your treatment.
PRP has been widely used in medicine for a long time and commonly used in orthopaedics for joints. PRP can also be used for hair restoration. There are studies that have shown PRP can improve the quality and thickness of hairs. It is a very useful treatment in patients with certain types of alopecia such as alopecia areata. In aesthetics, PRP became popular when Kim Kardashian had her treatment for skin rejuvenation.
PRP treatments need to be performed regularly to get the most benefit. Initially we recommend treatments every 4-6 weeks for a course of 3 treatments. Then most patients will have a maintenance treatment every 6-12 months.
