At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester microneedling is a procedure where fine needles penetrate the skin. The purpose of this is to stimulate new collagen formation and improve the skin. The procedure is performed using the EDS regenerate device from the makers of the Genuine Dermaroller. It is commonly used for: acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and ageing skin.

Microneedling at CLNQ starts from £190, performed at clinical depth by our trained aesthetic therapists in a medical clinic — not at cosmetic depth with a device you could buy online.

How Does Microneedling Work?

A sterile cartridge of fine needles is passed across the skin at a set depth, creating controlled micro-channels. Each one is a minor, precisely bounded injury.

The skin responds in three phases. Within hours, platelets release growth factors and inflammation begins. Over the following days, fibroblasts migrate into the area and start producing new collagen. Over the following weeks and months, that new collagen matures and remodels — type III collagen is gradually replaced by the stronger type I.

This is why results build. The visible glow at two days is inflammation. The real change arrives between four weeks and six months.

Depth is what separates a clinical treatment from a cosmetic one. Superficial passes at 0.25–0.5mm affect the epidermis and product penetration. Treating acne scarring or textural change requires depths in the 1.0–2.5mm range, which needs topical anaesthesia, sterile technique and a therapist trained to treat at that depth, in a clinic where a doctor is on hand if anything needs reviewing.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

  • Acne scarring — particularly rolling and boxcar scars. The best-evidenced indication.
  • Uneven texture and enlarged pores
  • Fine lines around the eyes and mouth
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation and general dullness
  • Stretch marks, on the body as well as the face
  • Surgical and traumatic scars, including as part of post-operative scar management
  • Early skin laxity — modest tightening from new collagen

It will not treat deep ice-pick scars, significant skin laxity, active cystic acne, or dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement. For those, the honest answers are respectively TCA CROSS or surgical techniques, an energy device such as Morpheus8, treating the acne first, and anti-wrinkle injections from £250.

Who Is Suitable For Microneedling?

Microneedling suits most skin types, and unlike many laser treatments it is safe across the full Fitzpatrick range — because it is mechanical rather than light-based, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin is comparatively low when performed correctly.

It is not suitable if you have active acne, eczema, psoriasis or an infection in the treatment area; an active cold sore outbreak; a history of keloid scarring; a bleeding disorder or are taking anticoagulants; have had systemic acne medication within the last six months; or are pregnant.

Morpheus8Radiofrequency energy at depth — adds real tightening£400

Medical microneedling, from £190. Motorised device, adjustable depth. Right for texture, pore size and most scarring.

Microneedling with PRP, from £295. Your own platelet-rich plasma is applied into the freshly created micro-channels, adding a concentrated dose of your own growth factors to the healing response. Often called a vampire facial. Best value in scarring and where you want maximum stimulation.

Radiofrequency microneedling — Morpheus8, from £400. Needles deliver radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layer as well as creating the micro-channels. Adds genuine tightening and contouring that standard microneedling cannot achieve. The right choice where laxity is part of the problem.

Microtox. Microneedling combined with very superficial botulinum toxin to refine pores and reduce oiliness alongside the textural work.

We will tell you which of these your skin actually needs. If standard microneedling will do the job, we will not sell you Morpheus8.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

For texture and general rejuvenation, three to four sessions, four to six weeks apart. For acne scarring, four to six sessions, sometimes more, depending on depth and scar type. Maintenance is typically two to three sessions a year.

Each appointment runs 45–60 minutes including 20–30 minutes of numbing.

What Should I Expect Afterwards?

Immediately, the skin looks as though you have mild to moderate sunburn. Expect redness for 24–48 hours, occasionally up to 72 hours after a deeper treatment, with some tightness, mild swelling and light flaking over days three to five.

Most people return to work the next day. Makeup can usually go back on after 24 hours.

For a week afterwards: no retinoids, no acids, no exfoliation, no saunas or hot yoga, no swimming pools, and daily SPF 50 without exception. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin is the most reliable way to cause pigmentation.

What Are The Risks Of Microneedling?

  • redness, swelling and sensitivity for one to three days
  • pinpoint bleeding during treatment, which is expected at clinical depths
  • bruising, occasionally
  • dryness and flaking in the first week
  • reactivation of cold sores — tell us if you get them and we will prescribe prophylactically
  • post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uncommon but more likely with sun exposure or in darker skin treated too aggressively
  • infection, uncommon with sterile single-use cartridges and proper aftercare
  • granuloma formation, rare, and associated with products applied into the channels that were never intended for it

At-home dermarollers are a genuine risk. They are difficult to sterilise, the needles blunt and tear rather than puncture, and the depth is uncontrolled. Tracking, scarring and infection from home devices are things we see and treat.

Microneedling FAQs

How much does microneedling cost at CLNQ?
Microneedling starts from £190 per session. Mesoestetic needling protocols are £150 each, with a course of six at £750. Hydraneedling is £225, or £675 for a course of six. Microneedling with PRP starts from £295 for a half face and £395 for a full face, and Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling from £400. Course pricing is confirmed in writing at consultation. Microneedling is carried out by our aesthetic therapists; Morpheus8 and treatments involving injectables are handled by the appropriate clinician.

Does microneedling hurt?
Topical anaesthetic is applied for 20–30 minutes beforehand. Most people describe a scratching or vibrating sensation rather than pain. Bonier areas — forehead, jawline — are more noticeable.

When will I see results?
An initial glow at about a week. Meaningful change from four to six weeks as new collagen matures, continuing to improve for up to six months after a completed course.

Microneedling or Morpheus8 — which do I need?
If your concern is texture, scarring or pore size, standard microneedling is usually enough. If there is laxity, or you want contouring along the jawline, Morpheus8 adds radiofrequency energy at depth and does something microneedling cannot. We assess this at consultation.

Is microneedling safe for darker skin?
Yes, and it is one of its advantages over many laser treatments. Because it is mechanical rather than light-based, the risk of pigmentary change is lower — provided depth and aftercare are handled properly.

Can I have microneedling if I am on systemic acne medication?
Not while taking it, and not for six months afterwards. systemic acne medication affects skin healing and increases scarring risk.

How is microneedling different from a HydraFacial?
HydraFacial cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates at the surface with no downtime. Microneedling works in the dermis to build new collagen. They do different jobs and combine well.
