At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester genetic screening is the analysis of your DNA or genes to identify if you have gene mutations that are associated with certain diseases or cancers.
These tests are performed using a sample of your saliva or blood. These screening tests are helpful if you are concerned about your risk of developing a specific disease or cancer.
After receiving a genetic screening Manchester & Cheshire patients can benefit whether the result is negative or positive. If the results are negative, there is some reassurance that you are not at a higher risk of developing the specific condition or cancer. Should the result be positive, you will be able to take action and seek advice to reduce risks, help your family learn about their risks and undergo further investigations if necessary to identify conditions earlier.

What happens if the genetic screening is positive?
If the results are positive then there is a mutation on the specific gene that increases your lifetime risk of developing that specific condition. This does not imply you have the condition or will definitely develop it but helps us become aware that your risks are higher than the general population.
What happens if the result is negative?
If your result is negative, this means that the gene mutation is not present that would be associated with an increased risk of the hereditary conditions being analysed. This does not eliminate your risk of developing the condition as there are other factors such as lifestyle and environmental factors. There may also be other mutations that may not be detected with the current technology or tests.
What is the process for genetic screening?
Our private GPs will take a medical history and family history that will identify your risk factors. They will identify which screening tests would be suitable for you. The test involves taking a sample of saliva (spit) or sometimes blood. This sample is then sent to a specialist laboratory for analysis. Your results will usually take between 4-6 weeks. When the results are available we will contact you to discuss them. If positive, a geneticist will contact you to discuss the implications of the results for the genetic screening in Manchester & Cheshire. The will discuss the outcomes and subsequent management if any is needed.

Think Carefully Before You Test
This is the section most clinics leave out, and it is the most important one.
A genetic result cannot be unlearned. If a screen shows you carry a variant that raises your risk of a serious condition, you will know that for the rest of your life, and so, in some circumstances, will your insurer and your relatives. Some people find that information empowering. Some find it corrosive. Both reactions are normal.
Questions worth answering honestly before you book:
- What would I actually do differently with this information?
- Am I prepared to find out something I cannot change?
- Have I thought about what a positive result would mean for my children or siblings, who share these genes?
- Do I understand that a normal result does not mean no risk?
If the honest answer to the first question is “nothing”, the test may not be the right purchase. We would rather say that at the consultation than after you have paid.
What Screening Does and Does Not Tell You
It can tell you whether you carry specific known variants associated with higher risk of certain cancers or inherited cardiac conditions, and in some cases how you are likely to metabolise particular medications.
It cannot tell you whether you will develop a condition. Most disease is a combination of many genes, environment and chance. A raised genetic risk is a probability, not a diagnosis, and a reassuring result is not a guarantee.
Where a result is significant, it is not the end of the conversation. It usually means more frequent surveillance, earlier screening, or referral to clinical genetics — and we will arrange that rather than leave you with a PDF.
