Abdominoplasty, more commonly know as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the tummy or abdomen. The procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. The operation itself takes about 2 to 3 hours to perform. At CLNQ Clinic in Cheshire & Manchester tummy tucks are one of our most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. The tummy tuck is performed under a general anaesthetic which means you will go to sleep to have this done. If you are having a mini tummy tuck procedure is usually a day case which means you will be discharged the same day. A full abdominoplasty may require an overnight stay in hospital. The surgeon will remove the excess skin and fat from the abdomen. The incision is then stitched closed and dressing applied. Patients will need to wear support garments for about 6 weeks following surgery.

During a tummy tuck Manchester & Cheshire patients are put under general anaesthetic. The procedure involves removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and improving the contour of the body. Some potential risks with tummy tuck are discussed below although your surgeon will discuss these and more during your consultation.
It is normal to get some swelling after any treatment and this usually takes a few weeks to settle. Some patients may also experience bruising or bleeding which is can be related to medication being taken. Some medicines such as aspirin and herbal supplements can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. A haematoma occurs if there is bleeding under the skin.
There will be a permanent scar along the waist line and around the belly button. The scar heals well in most people but some people may develop raised or lumpy scarring known as hypertrophic or keloid scars.
All patients have some degree of asymmetry and sometimes following surgery these may become more noticeable or you may become more aware of these. We will try to highlight some of these asymmetries preoperatively. Many of these are beyond the control of the surgeon and based on your anatomy.
Any procedure can result in change in sensation to the skin in the surrounding area. This is due to some of the sensory nerve being cut during the procedure when removing the excess skin. These changes may result in numbness or increased sensitivity. They may be temporary or permanent. It is very common to get numbness in the area above the scar following a tummy tuck.
There can be contour irregularities such as indentations following surgery such as liposuction. These usually settle with time but some areas may remain. There may be areas where the skin may look bunched up along the scar line and this usually settles with time.
Infections are uncommon following these procedures although they may occur. You will usually be provided given antibiotics during the procedure and to take home with you afterwards. Sometimes there may be small areas where the deeper stitches may protrude resulting in a stitch abscess which usually resolves.
Although very rare, deep organ injury can happen when performing liposuction or muscle repair during a tummy tuck. This can cause perforation of internal organs which can be a serious life threatening complication.
There may be some changes with time, ageing, pregnancy or weight changes. It is important to understand that a tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure and not a weight loss procedure.
You will have a consultation with our surgeon who will ask about your concerns and desired outcomes. They will take a full medical history and examine you. They will discuss the various options for body contouring with you and advise which may be most appropriate for you. You will always be offered a second consultation prior to surgery.
Recovery times vary based on the patient and the complexity of the operation. Patients can typically start more rigorous activities within 6-8 weeks and go back to work within 2-4 weeks.
We recommend that no strenuous activity such as exercise or intercourse is undertaken during the first 6 weeks following surgery. You can return back to the gym after 6 weeks but starting slowly and gradually building up again.
You will need to wear a support garment for the first 6 weeks following your tummy tuck procedure. There will also be a compression binder for the first 2 weeks.
The price for a full tummy tuck procedure is from about £10500. The price may change depending on a number of factors such as the need for liposuction, Vaser or extent of tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck will usually be less expensive.
Stretch marks in the lower abdomen can sometimes be reduced or eliminated with an abdominoplasty; however, they cannot be eliminated from other parts of the body.
