Augmentation Mastopexy

Augmentation mastopexy is the term used for an uplift and implant procedure. This is an operation that uses an implant to provide volume to the breast whilst undertaking an uplift to lift and tighten it. An uplift is often required when the breasts have become ptotic or sagged. This can happen after having children, breast feeding or weight loss. During the procedure for an augmentation mastopexy Manchester & Cheshire patients are usually put under a general anaesthetic and most patients will be able to go home the same day. The operation itself takes about 2 hours to perform. To learn more or schedule a consultation, contact us at CLNQ Clinic.

What is involved with an Augmentation Mastopexy?

At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester augmentation mastopexy is performed under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will usually place the implant in before performing the uplift. The uplift involves lifting the position of the nipple and removing some tissue and skin from the lower part of the breast. There is usually a scar around the nipple, vertically down the middle of the breast and horizontally underneath. This scar is commonly referred to as an anchor scar.

Do I need a breast uplift?

The most common reason someone would require a breast uplift is if the breast droops or sags significantly. This usually means that nipple position is below the natural breast fold. The main reasons this may happen include:

  • After weight loss
  • After breast feeding
  • Following pregnancy or postpartum
  • Naturally ptotic or droopy breasts

What are the risks of augmentation mastopexy?

Augmentation mastopexy is performed under general anaesthetic. The procedure involves using a breast implant to increase the size of the breasts and an uplift to lift the breast and nipple. During the consultation for an augmentation mastopexy Cheshire & Manchester patients will discuss with their surgeon the potential risks listed below that come with an uplift and implants.

Bruising, Swelling, Bleeding

It is normal to get some swelling after any treatment and this usually takes a few weeks to settle.  Some patients may also experience bruising or bleeding which is can be related to medication being taken.  Some medicines such as aspirin and herbal supplements can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. A haematoma occurs if there is bleeding with the pocket.

Scar

There will be a permanent scar around the natural breast crease where the implant is inserted.  The scar heals well in most people but some people may develop raised or lumpy scarring known as hypertrophic or keloid scars.  The scar is most commonly an anchor shape.

Asymmetry

All patients have some degree of asymmetry between the breasts and sometimes following surgery these may become more noticeable or you may become more aware of these.  We will try to highlight some of these asymmetries preoperatively.  Many of these are beyond the control of the surgeon and based on your anatomy such as chest wall or rib differences, size differences, differing nipple positions and much more.

Change in Sensation

Any procedure can result in change in sensation to the skin in the surrounding area or nipple.  This is due to some of the sensory nerve being cut during the procedure to make room for the implant or swelling.  These changes may result in numbness or increased sensitivity.  They may be temporary or permanent.

Breast Implant Related Problems

Breast implants may have number of issues related to their use.  These may include: Capsular contracture; Rupture; Rare types of Cancers; Breast Implant Illness.  We will discuss these during your consultation. Breast implants will also need replacing at some point in the future.

Infection

Infections are uncommon following these procedures although they may occur.  You will usually be provided given antibiotics during the procedure and to take home with you afterwards.  Although very uncommon, if infection does occur there is a possibility that the implant may need to be removed.

Nipple Loss

With any uplift procedure there is a potential risk of compromise to the blood supply to the nipple.  This can result in loss of the nipple either partially or completely.  This is a rare event but it can happen and certain things such as smoking can greatly increase the risk of it.

Changes with Time

There may be some changes with time, ageing, pregnancy or weight changes.  Your natural breasts will always be undergoing changes and breasts with implants will also always change. It is difficult to predict how the breast will change in each individual.  The uplift is not a permanent procedure and the breasts will always drop again.

Augmentation Mastopexy Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during the consultation?

You will have a consultation with our surgeon who will ask about your concerns and desired outcomes.  They will take a full medical history and examine you taking measurements to help with implant choice. We will assess if an uplift is required.  They will discuss the various options of implants and provide guidance for your specific requirements and anatomy.  You will try on some implants to see the differing shapes and sizes.  You will always be offered a second consultation prior to surgery.  Sometimes you may need a staged procedure.  This is where you have the uplift initially followed by a second operation to place the implants.  This staged approach is used in patients who have very severely droopy breasts.

When can I go back to work after breast surgery?

Most people will go back to work about 1-2 weeks following surgery.  During the first week, you will have dressings which will be changed or removed at one week by the nurses at the hospital.

When can I go back to the gym?

We recommend that no strenuous activity such as exercise or intercourse is undertaken during the first 6 weeks following surgery.  You can return back to the gym after 6 weeks but starting slowly and gradually building up again.

Do I need to wear any special bras?

We recommend you wear a good postoperative bra for the first 6 weeks following your surgery.  We recommend our CLNQ x Macom for this.

How much is augmentation mastopexy?

The price for breast augmentation is from £12000.  The price may change depending on a number of factors such as the need for implant sizers if there is asymmetry or if you have implants replaced.  We will confirm the price during your consultation.
