What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, also known as HbOT, involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment such as a chamber. We now offer this at our flagship clinic at Deansgate Square in Manchester. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Manchester is a medical treatment that enhances the bodies’ natural healing processes by saturating bodily fluids, tissues and cells with oxygen under pressure hence the name ‘Hyper’ meaning increased and ‘Baric’ meaning pressure.
The hyperbaric oxygen chambers are pressurised with 100 percent oxygen, the equivalent of diving 33 to 45 feet below sea level. The increase in pressure allows more oxygen to be dissolved into the plasma which is upto 10 to 20 times more than normal. The normal air we breathe contains approximately 21% oxygen whereas the air breathed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber contains around 200 to 240%.
What are the Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
- Post-Surgery Recovery – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy helps reduce swelling, fights infection, builds new blood vessels which produces healthy tissue.
- Healthy ageing – HbOT can help diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles by promoting fast repair of damaged cells.
- A healthy brain – The therapy increases stem cell migration to injury sites and accelerates blood vessel growth in the brain.
- Injury Recovery and Endurance – It allows athletes to recover faster from injury. Performance is improved and endurance enhanced.
- Relieves Pain and Inflammation – Treatment can provide quick and strong pain relief whilst also dramatically reducing inflammation.
What happens during a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session?
The treatment consists of three phases. The first phase is compression, which involves the air within the chamber increasing in pressure. During this phase of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Manchester patients will feel fullness in the ears similar to the feeling of being on an airplane. Once the pressure has reached the desired level, the second phase, treatment, will commence. The client then wears a mask and begins to breathe in the pure oxygen. After the treatment, the final decompression stage occurs, during which the pressure is lowered at a comfortable level. The rate of pressure is monitored by our trained staff to ensure your comfort and safety.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally a safe procedure and complications are rare. Treatment does however carry some risk such as:

- Temporary near-sightedness (myopia) caused by temporary eye lens changes
- Lung collapse caused by air pressure changes (barotrauma)
- Seizures as a result of too much oxygen (oxygen toxicity) in your central nervous system
- Lowered blood sugar in people who have diabetes treated with insulin
- In certain circumstances, fire — due to the oxygen-rich environment of the treatment chamber.
- For your safety, items such as lighters or battery-powered devices that generate heat are not allowed into the chamber. In addition, you may need to remove hair and skin care products that are petroleum based, as they are a potential fire hazard.
